I wheel in the Tercel to my mechanic for consultation of my dying fan blower motor.

A customer walks through the front door. She's an slim woman in her mid 40s, with an pricy bag, yoga pants, and a frozen frown. The mechanic offers the usual pleasantries. She wants an oil change on her Silverado.

"Alllright [as he types info for work order]. What year is it?"
"What year? Oh, um I don't know [dramatic sigh]."

She digs though her bag, as if she has the year of her vehicle written on a sticky note in there somewhere. She gives up after about two seconds and snaps at him.

"It's just an oil change!"

The mechanic works up a sly smile, the one you make when you can't tell a customer what you think of them.

"I'll figure it out [he beams a pained smile]. Keys."

As I leave the shop, I see her car. A blacked out '03 Silverado, with those LED aftermarket taillights... And of course she's also parked in the fire lane.

By the way it's 28 degrees outside and my heat stopped working in the Tercel which totally sucks ass.

That sucks. I have a love/hate relationship with the Tercel. On one hand, it was a piece of shit, and quite possibly the least reliable Toyota ever built, but on the other hand, it was scruffy and had alot of character. My dad had one when I was growing up and it ended up kind of being my first car, but ultimately it decided to be a piece of crap and formed a crack in the engine block. Ugh, that car...

Mine has 333k, original motor and trans. 4wd still works great. It might be my favorite car.

Oh, it's a 4WD model. Never mind. That one's a gem. It's one of my favorites too. Mine was an '88. I will give it credit though, it could get out of snow better than a jeep and that was only fwd.

Ah don't worry. Mines going to end up looking like this in 2 years. The rust is spreading.

Rust can always be stopped with a bit of elbow grease, a couple of dozen wirebrush drill attachments from Harbor Freight (they're cheap, and the exact same ones that you buy for twice as much from anywhere else), and some rustoleum. When you get into the 300s, doesn't it kind of turn into a challenge to see how long you can keep it going for? My MR2 is at 211k, and I bought it because I was afraid of throwing my BRZ into a wall, but now I've grown attached to it and want to see how long it can keep kicking for. There's something special about the thin metal Toyotas of the 80s. People say that Japanese cars can't have souls, but these ones definitely do. They're just so honest. They weren't built to try to be something that they weren't, and that's an exception in the automotive industry. Somehow, Toyota managed to keep it going for like a decade and a half straight with no lulls. It's damn impressive.
